Telecourse Frequently Asked Questions:
What’s the need for Telecourses?
Telecourses fill a niche for students whose schedules do not permit weekly attendance at lectures. Sometimes students are homebound or have problems with transportation and cannot easily come to campus. In all cases, Telecourses make learning more convenient and accessible to students.
Who teaches Telecourses?
Sometimes the video will feature a UNO faculty member while other times the video will feature national experts. In either case, your Telecourses instructor is a regular UNO faculty member. The UNO faculty member will meet with students, coordinate the class, and assign course grades.
Do I need to attend any classes?
Yes. In some cases, students must attend the first class meeting that provides an orientation to the course. The first class meeting is listed in the bulletin; check for day, time, and room location. Instructors will provide students with a regular course syllabus and indicate the dates of any additional lecture classes, discussion sessions, or examinations. Class meetings will be conducted at the same time in the same location as the first class meeting.
What if I miss the first class meeting?
On occasion, a student may miss the first class meeting for personal reasons. It is important to contact your instructor to obtain information you missed in the first class meeting.
Do Telecourses involve readings or assignments?
Yes. Just like a traditional class, students are assigned readings in texts. Your instructor may also make writing assignments.
If my class does not meet on a regular basis, how do I communicate with my instructor if I have questions? Instructors can be contacted by various means including telephone, e-mail, or mail. Of course, students can meet with instructors in person if necessary. Check with your instructor for arrangements.
Are Telecourse grades handled differently?
No. Grades are assigned by your instructor and posted on your transcript without any different designation.
If I have to drop a Telecourse, what do I do?
Students who drop a Telecourse must follow the regular credit course drop procedures of the university. Do not assume that you are dropped from a class automatically just because you do not attend class meetings.
How do I receive a Telecourse?
Telecourses are available to students through various forms of delivery. For most forms of delivery, it is necessary to have a VCR.
